Joe has a decade’s worth of clinical experience in the healing arts: as a Licensed Massage Therapist in his home country the US, and as a massage practitioner, Registered Acupuncturist, and Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner in British Columbia. His journey began with his own recovery from a nearly fatal motorcycle accident. The outpouring of concern and help from his community was humbling, and inspired him to live a life in which he could be that support for others.

Joe’s massage background leads him to regularly use the many manual therapies of TCM in addition to acupuncture such as cupping, gua sha, tui na, moxibustion, ear seeds, gaos, and e-stim while continuing to blend his Western massage techniques with TCM. His herbal training and background can either stand alone to support internal conditions, can be combined to support an acupuncture treatment, can be used topically in other manual therapies, or can be incorporated into a person’s daily life in the best “herbal” therapy of all: a well-regulated diet. Joe’s thrilled to be able to offer you TCM herbs and formulas from Spring Wellness’ extensive raw herb dispensary.

Joe’s study and practice of TCM is also a manifestation of the deep interest he’s held since his early 20’s in the message of philosophies like Taoism. He studied acupuncture at Tzu Chi International College of TCM in Vancouver, TCM herbalism at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, and since becoming registered, has practiced in Sidney, the Comox Valley, and here in Victoria. In previous life iterations, he’s been a professional musician in Austin TX, a cobbler for Birkenstock USA in San Francisco CA (er spricht auch ein bisschen Deutsch), and a writer of short stories and plays in his hometown of Pittsburgh PA. He’s married to an environmental scientist and trained classical flautist, and they both do their best to keep their tortoise shell kitty cat, Polyana, from getting too bored.
